A 0 to 1 learning platform for students and teachers
Kaplan needed one platform for B2B and B2C learning. I took inconsistent legacy course experiences to a shared design system, argued for an adaptive mobile approach and tested new educator tools with teachers.

The starting point
Where we started with design consistency
Legacy course experiences looked and behaved differently from each other, so the new platform needed one shared design language.
Design system
Kicked off a design system and kept it going
- Components shared across products
- Guidelines for spacing, icons, buttons and color
- Breakpoints for desktop, tablet and mobile
Mobile strategy
Negotiating an adaptive mobile approach
Our research showed that on mobile, students didn't want the full desktop product. They wanted a way to study on the go, in short sessions that fit between everything else in their day.
I used that qualitative and quantitative data to convince leadership to take a scaled-down, adaptive approach to mobile instead of shrinking the desktop experience.
That led to the idea for Question of the Day, a free daily question bank where students could try our material before buying a package or subscription.
Validation
Testing early and often with teachers
Clickable prototypes of new educator tools went in front of teachers and tutors, and every finding became a specific design action.
- average usability for group creation
- 8.67/10
- average usability for the gradebook
- 8.5/10
Platform as a service
White label theming for partners
The design system made one timed test experience easy to re-theme for each partner brand on the platform.
